Samuel Smith Elementary School
Early Childhood Development Addition
Burlington, New Jersey

16,000 sq. ft.
29 Modules

The addition consists of 29 customized, steel-framed modules comprising a welcome area, 12 classrooms, and a central corridor. Each spacious classroom has its own large bay window.  Standing outside, observers get the impression of a grouping of smaller buildings rather than a single large structure. The bays are surfaced in stucco and block, while the main body of the building is brick to match the existing school.  The addition’s main entry features monumental stairs and an inviting arched canopy. Natural light enters the classrooms through large bay windows at a “kid friendly” height.  Each room has built-in maple cubbies and matching maple cabinetry installed by Kullman. Sound attenuation features shield students from the noise common to school corridors.  The concrete sub-floors and acoustic ground faced block in the hallways create a quiet learning environment.
